film music event: Coming of Age with Joe Hisaishi

Please join us on Friday, July 18 from 8-10pm EST for a film music mixer, jointly hosted by the AMS Music and Media study group and the SMT Film and Multimedia interest group. At this meeting, we’ll be discussing the soundtracks to two wonderful Studio Ghibli coming of age films scored by the eminent Joe Hisaishi, Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) and The Boy and the Heron (2023). 

While we will have the films available at the mixer to share short clips as necessary for the discussion, the expectation is participants will have prepared by screening the movies on their own in advance. Both films are available online with a subscription to the streaming service Max, or are rentable digitally through most of the major media rental providers. All levels of participation are welcome—from scholars of these films, to any type of soundtrack specialist, to scholars in other fields interested in learning more about film music, to anyone with a general interest.

To make the atmosphere more festive, feel free to bring your favorite beverage, snack, popcorn, etc.!
